Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and meditation aren’t just coincidentally taught together. In the Yogic tradition of ancient India, meditation was considered to be a type of yoga - the yolking or restraining of the mind. This older conception of yoga had eight different types of practices and so was known as Ashtanga Yoga (The Eight Limbs of Yoga).
The yoga we practice for exercise, flexibility, and mindfulness today was just one aspect of that old conception of yoga. It was known as Hatha Yoga, a term you might have heard before.
So most meditation practices are technically yogic practices, at least the way they were originally taught.
